I have a 1972 9.8 mercury, that get up to about half to 3/4 throddle out on the water then boggs down, runs great beside that starts on the 1st pull every time after the 1st start up after being put in the water, I just bought this motor late this passed winter, changed the impeller, lower unit oil, and plugs, though it was in tip top shape till got it out on the water and found out every time I get to around half throddle or a little more it acts like its not getting gas, this motor had L76 champion plugs in it, I replaced them with ngk plugs recomended by the local marina, I did notice on the L76 plugs I took out that the point coming out of the center did not come out as far as the new ngk plug I put in, could this be part of the problem? a bad coil? or just a gummed up carb? did notice also that the bottom plug on the old ones I took out had a little more carbon build up then the top one, is this normal? the manual says this motor has a high speed fix jet, could it still be stuck?

Sounds like a fuel issue - I'd disassemble and clean the carb...<br />- Scott

Re: mercury 9.8 throddle question

Iam leaning towards it being a fuel issue, just getting as many opinions as I can before tackling the task, I have been told to try putting some carb cleaner in the gas, but also told by others that that alone wont do the job,
