Mercury 9.8 Questions

My grandfather just gave me this old motor. I have a couple questions.
1. The motor has been sitting up for a long time and all the wires have dry rotted and need to be replaced along with other things, including water pump, the best he can remember. So how much do you think it might cost to have it fixed.

2. Do you think this motor might be too large for a 14' jon boat with extra deep sides. It will be primarily used for duck hunting along with running small rivers setting trotlines.

Does the jon boat have a capacity plate? If so that will tell you the maximum horsepower rating. My gut feeling is that a 9.8 would not be to large for a boat that size and if you get it running right would be ideal for the use you are intend to put it to.

What year is the motor?

Can't find any type of plate on the boat. It is a Quachita boat, that is all I can make out of sticker. The last time it had a sticker was 1981. There isn't any foam in the seats, it is just all aluminum. So for the capacity rating, who knows. It is 14' long, 32 wide in the bottom, and extra deep. If I can get the motor running, I am gonna try it.

A 9.8 will be perfect for that boat. Good luck, have fun and be safe.:)
