Mercury 8hp fuel problem

I have a 1998 8hp Mercury that I purchased new. It has had very little use and very little maintenance. The last time I had it in the water I could not get it to start.

Figuring old fuel (1 yr) was the problem, I disposed of the old and started with fresh fuel, a new tank, line, and primer bulb.

The motor would start on the 1st pull and run fine on full choke. When it is taken off of full choke, it seems to starve for fuel and dies within about 10 seconds. If choked again it will stay running.

I pulled the carb, disassembled, and cleaned with Gumout, though the carb did not have a varnish buildup and everything looked very clean. Reassembled and had the same results.

The local shop suggested I might have fouled up the check ball in the primer system. I disassembled again and made sure the ball was seated properly. All gaskets, diaphrams, and springs look good throughout the carb and fuel pump. Reassembled and had the same results.

Other notes: The new tank and bulb seem to act odd. The bulb doesn't really get firm like on my old tank. I have tried two new bulbs. When squeezed, you can see it push back into the tank. I have only a small amount of fuel in the tank (1/2 gal) Also, the seal on top of the primer system looks like it may be leaking a small amount of fuel when pumped. It is just slightly wet.

I realize this message looks so similar to so many prior ones, but I am stumped. Sorry so long winded! Thanks for any input!

Do you have your primer bulb installed in the correct direction? Most have an arrow showing the fuel flow direction.
Is the vent on your tank open?

I have had a similiar problem. It's probably the primer bulb. All primer bulbs are not created equal. The black ones that you get from a marine dealership are the good ones. The grey ones that they sell at the department stores are the ones that gave me trouble.

Thanks for the replys BW & steverino!

The bulb is in the correct position. The tank, bulb, and line are new. The bulb that came with the tank acted in this odd manner, so I replaced it with a new OMC bulb, but it does not really get firm either. Both bulbs will fill the sight bowl, but seem to push fuel/air back into the tank when squeezed. A new bulb is about the easiest thing to try, so I will give it a whirl and see!

Thanks! Safe Boating!

Also, the tank vent is open. I have also tested with tank cap off. Thanks again.

Not the primer bulb. New primer bulb gets firm and feels right. Then engine will start fully choked. It will idle awhile off choke and then starve for fuel and die. It will run forever at higher rpms fully choked. When I shut down the engine after it has run awhile fully choked and press the primer bulb, there seems to be air between tank and bulb. Air seems to push back into the tank.

My next step will be to buy a kit and rebuild the carb, even though it looks good to me.

Thanks for any ideas.

I wouldn't take the carb apart just yet. It's probably your fuel line/tank/primer bulb. Get ahold of a tank/line/primer bulb assembly that you know works on a different motor to confirm that this is/is not the problem.

Persistance pays off!!
I tried my buddy's tank assembly with my 8hp on the test stand. Ran like a champ! You have got to be kidding!! Before trying my tank assembly again, I tightened the hose clamps on the fuel line from the tank. Would you believe it? The little bugger runs great with my tank as well!

Thanks for helping me narrow down this problem. I will save the rebuild kit until I really need it! Kudos steverino!!!

Re: Mercury 8hp fuel problem

Problem might well be a fuel fitting leak that cause the fuel pump to suck air. I would check all the fittings, hoses, etc. I have found that sometimes the problem doesn't show itself by fuel leaking out when the engine isn't running and the bulb is pumped, but when the engine starts and vibrates the air leak begins. Good Luck!
