Thanks to the members here i`ve finally got my `63 Johnson / 58 bell boy banshee going very well.I have another boat and motor to restore (A Carribean Catalina with a Mercury 850XS--I know very little about Mercury motors and was wondering what these motors are like generally--i mean do they have any idiosyncrasies that i should be wary of? cheers!

Re: mercury 850XS

This is a great little motor and the ignition systems and wiring are the biggest problems on these older motors. The 850XS had a little bigger jetting spec and different lower unit. If it has the original unit it will have the water inlet holes on bottom of housing near the skag.

Thanks Faztbullet---It does have the original lower unit---the previous owner has grafted in a garden hose fitting on the port side of this motor so no muffs are required to flush it--its there permanently and sticks out about 1.5"
