Mercury 850 shift linkage

I replaced my impeller on my 85hp mercury ( about a 1980), when I put the bottom end back together, it stays in forward. I took it apart and it seems the linkage splines r lined up, but when I did it the first time they may not have been. Now I can't get it to shift out of forward. Any advice out there?

Sure, Set merc Control to neutral. Turn shift shaft all the way CCW with fingers. Now use piler to gently turn it CCW until it clicks into N. Reinstall.

I wanted to thank everyone that post question and answers This sight really helps me a lot . I worked for an hour trying to get the shifter to work. Thanks again
