Mercury 850 (1974)/ Reverse problem

I just bought a '74 Glastron. It was a good deal (I thought). On the first day out, there was no reverse while trailering the boat. I'm fairly certain reverse was used sometime during the day, and worked fine. The motor serial# is 3868376.

I took it out the next day, and it sounds like it's shifting into reverse. With a RPM increase, you can hear a spinning sound. However, it will go backwards at the minimum RPM, but it's almost unnoticeable.

I thought something was tangled in the prop, but when I checked it out a home, there was nothing. The prop spins easily in neutral, not at all in reverse, and one way in forward (with a clicking sound).

Since it's boating season, I don't want it in the shop for 3 weeks. I've ordered the manual, and although I've been around boats, I've never had to fix one (it was always someone elses boat).

I thought with enough explanation, you experts "out there" might be able to pinpoint my problem, and I could fix this problem myself.

Please remember I've never pulled the lower unit, but I'm willing to give it a shot. Thanks!
