Mercury 85 H.P 850 Thunderbolt Ignition

I am have difficulty finding the serial number on this motor. is there any that I should check for the number? I cannot find a plate or "badge" that indicates the number. any help would be greatly appreciated. - mike

The serial number would normally be on the motor, in the front, between the transom brackets. If not there, look for a silver plug on the block. If it has distributor ignition, it is 1975 or older. Four coils make it 1976 or newer.
