I'm looking to purchase a later version 75hp mercury possibly 1984-1989 and need to know how to tell the difference between those years by looking at the cowls. Which one of these pictures would be an 88 and which would be an 84? Or rather which is the later version? Any advice?

The motor with brown trim is older than the other with the grey/silver/red pinstripes.

You can tell the years for sure by looking up serial numbers, here's one site with that info:

Mercury: 70-115HP

Re: Mercury 80s cowl differences in years?

So I might be picking up this 1986-1993 75hp merc judging by the decal guide chrome dome posted. This motor looks very identical to my 1978 80hp merc both in shape/style and under the cowls. Mercury started prop rating motors back in 1985 right? Both my 80hp and this 75hp have the exact same bore/stroke. I am not sure if the carbs are the same although they do look the same. Now my question is this:

I know you lose about 15-20% power from crank to prop. So does this mean that my 1978 80hp is more like a 65hp at the prop, and that this 75hp is more like a 94hp at the crank?!? Even though they are the same motor from what I see? Can anyone shed some light on this please as I am really confused... Is it possible to have 2 motors with the same block/bore/stroke/carbs and one puts out 10-15hp more than the other because I am confused!!

Oh and this 75hp I'm interested in is the exact one in the picture I posted in the first post on this thread, the later version motor on the right.

Thank you all so far for the replies!

Nope... the 1978-86 are EXACTLY the same motors only difference is cowls and rating. You 1978 80 is 75hp at prop as is the 1986 75hp. Both make about 85hp at crankshaft

Not in the pictures of motors you posted only decal was changed....

Awesome, thats good stuff to hear! So then I will most likely be picking this beauty up. Shes in really good condition as you can see from the picture I posted, thats the actual motor there. And nice to hear they are the same because I am already over powered and didn't wanna go higher in power really. And I like the fact that this is basically an upgraded version of my motor, newer style self contained trim, no hoses and no mess... Also I forgot to mention that its been completely rebuilt, not just the block, but also the fuel pump, water pump, carbs etc..

Thanks for your replies guys!!!!
