I am new at this and I just bought a 1983 Marlin Ski boat , I belive the motor has been changed,
It has a Mercury 800 80hp. Is it a 2 stroke or a 4 stroke , and there is a plug mid trans is that oil or trans fluid.

Re: Mercury 800 80hp 2 stroke or 4 stroke ?

First of all the only US mfgr that made a 4 cycle engine back then was Homelite...had a 55 hp and an 85. The Merc is 2 cycle and is 50:1 Gas-oil mix so add 1 pint of 2 cycle marine oil (TCW3 rated...current ratings) to each 6 gallon tank of gas.

As to what you said about a tank, that engine had neither. You need more info on that part for someone to understand what you are talking about. If it had power trim and tilt, undo the fill plug on the side of the pump and get some on your finger. Tell us what color it is....honey or red.

Thanks for your reply, 2 stroke thats good to know. I do have some boating experience just don't know much about outboards.
With further inspection it is gear oil in the lower end. :)
You made my day THANKS: TMACK
