I've a 80hp 4 cyl Mercury, from the Manual info I think its a Pre-84. The problem I have, my Dealer is asking for the Serial No. , so I can get a quote for a new Stator.

I've check the engine mounting bracket and the core plug for Numbers but nothing can be seen.

The engine cover has a blue band around its middle, but some say its a thunderbolt.

Please help to indentify my motor or any tips how to check its year.

Dartboy

The earlier engines didn't have the serial number on a plug. Try looking on the top of the block. If the engine hasn't had a replacement block the 7 digit serial number will be stamped there. You may have to remove some of the cowl mounting paraphenalia.

Chris...........

Unicorn, The pic you showed for a 1978 is wrong. two thin striped were used from 72-74 and slightly wider were used in 75.

Ok, I have to know how do you get that darn posting of pictures. I have tried several times. I have left the default "http:// and taken it out and just pasted the URL and they both show only a red x. What am I doing wrong?

Craig

Yez, and the IMAGE command works with normal picture files only. Not all inserts (like animated) will work. In such cases, or if the pic file is very large, you may want to supply the link only to help the post run fast & smooth on the forum.

Most 'good' picture hosting sites will allow you to reduce the file size. Some hosting sites are overloaded and postings are sometimes rejected - this can show as a red X.

Also some sites charge 'points'. When you have reached your limit the photo is rejected or a advertising is added to the photo - such as 'Hosted free at MyFishingPictures.com'.

Did you notice that she is wearing high heels - Chris, that would be towards the bottom of the picture.

Aldo

Re: Mercury 80 HP - Year???

Right - conditions apply to most hosting sites.

Limited space per user, limited traffic per picture, forced commercials etc.

I'm one of those running my own webserver which puts me in charge and removes all nags. Did this mainly because I'm hosting some rather spaceconsuming files and got tired of spreading them on several hosting services with varying rules.

Great solution, btw.

Re: Mercury 80 HP - Year???

look very carefully, the 78 has stripes in the blue while the 79 doesn't. On the 79 where the blue changes to black it looks like the blue is splattered. Also 78 was the last year a zero was added to the hp to get the model. ie. 900 was 90hp, 1150 was 115hp.

Re: Mercury 80 HP - Year???

I think you are correct.. Very subtle difference, but the 900 v 90hp is significant.
I've corrected the list above...
