My old merc 4 stroke had an oil filter, but my new mercury 8 hp does not come with one. Is there a reason mercury 4 stroke low horse power engines no longer use oil filters?

Well if you say there is no oil filter,on smaller HP. I would think an extra oil change per season wouldnt be a bad idea. I will run a few extra dead presidents, but it will be cheap insurance on your investment.I would always buy a top rated oil,or think of a full synthetic oil change.

Just my .02 worth.

There is a screen underneath the power head, but filters are not used on the 9.9 and smaller Tohatsu models with the Mercury labels. Just change the oil every 50 hours and do not run synthetic as it contributes to fuel dilution in the crankcase of your raw water cooled outboard.

What about synthetic blend/semi-synthetic ? I got some automotive

Castrol GTX5 Lightec 10W40

that I want to use for break-in of this motor (2010 9.9), Motoman style..

Is it better to use the factory-supplied

Mercury 4-Stroke Outboard Oil (SAE 10W-30) ?

Chances are the Mercury oil is a semi-synth too. So, no harm...I still prefer a straight dino oil though.
