I have a Mercury 70hp Blueband engine serial no 3334958. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what year it is.

Also I'm having trouble starting it. It rolls over ok but just doesn't seem to fire. The fuel has been in it since last season...does that make a difference. Also I changed the spark plugs and stator last year, but it's still not going.

One last thing. When it was actually going and we had it in the water...it didn't seem to have enough power to pull the skier out of the water. I bought the boat late last summer and don't really know much about boats to be honest, but is this size engine enough to waterski with. The boat itself is a 15 ft armstrong super v.

Thank you...any advise would be appreciated.

Nigel. :)

Nigel, old gas makes a big difference. You need to use fresh gas. That 70, depending on compression, should be enough to get a skier out of the water on two ski's. It also depends on how many folks you had in the boat at the time and how heavy the skier was. I learned to ski behind a 25 horse engine when i was a kid and only two people in the boat.

I'm guessing she's a 1973.
Check it for spark...its not uncommon to lose a cylinder with those packs. If you do, it'll be a dog but still idle smooth...
Another thing I've found is by giving only a small amount of throttle and full choke with key, it starts easier.

Hi Trent

The water is still hard up here. Probably be a month or two yet before thaw.... I'll be sure to record a few snap shots for you. :)

Henry,

Thanks for the advise. Changed the fuel and made sure I got it all ut of the line and refuelled. Re-Charged battery and she started within 3 key turns after sitting out all winter. Let her run for a few minutes (the neighbours loved that!) We're taking her out tonight to try the skiing. Last time I tried I had 2 guys in the boat, and me in the water. I'm about 200lbs so it has some work to do. Anyway thanks again for the advise. I came across this website yesterday and I'm very impressed. It's great knowing that I'm not alone !!. Thanks again.

Best Wishes,
Nigel :D

Hi Nigel, when you try out the skiing and your still getting dragged along with half the lake in front of you :D you might want to check the prop size. You might have a prop that is good for cruising/speed but slow to get the boat up & planing. If you have a rev counter let us know what the rpm is at full throttle.

Cheers
Mike
