I have a mercury 70 thunderboldt ignition motor. serial #5286242. First I would like to know what year the motor is, I recieved boat with no info. about anything. And as for my problem, i tried to start the motor and it turns over fine, but wont fire up. I pulled one spark plug out to see if i could see any spark when cranked, but didnt see any. I've seen other comments about (stator) or (swithboxes) that seem to be common solutions, but not sure what they are. Oh, the motor looks very clean, but it has sat for a least a year unstarted. CAN ANYONE HELP.
THANKS

First of all its a 1979 model.

Make sure first of all (if equipped) the kill switch is installed. No spark on ANY cylinder?? Pull the sparkplugs (all of them) and recheck for spark. These engines MUST turn over pretty fast to produce spark.

MIKE: THE STATOR SIT'S UNDER THE FLYWHEEL.THE MERC. ARE THE SAME AS THE FORCE IF IT IS A LATE MODEL.I DON'T HAVE A WIREING DESCRIPTION FOR THAT MOTOR.IT SHOULD BE BLUE @ RED FOR STATOR .YELLOW FOR CHARGEING SYSTEM .And maybe purple for triggers.QUESTION NO SPARK ON ALL CYLINDERS? SOUNDS LIKE THE STATOR. BUT I WOULD CHECK IT OUT TO MAKE SHURE.
