Mercury 70 HP - What Year?

Thanks in advance for your help. My dad just purchased a Mercury 70 HP outboard and we need to know the year. The number on the motor under the cover reads "78529" with a "2" just below that. Can someone please tell me the year? <br /><br />If this doesn't look like the serial number, could someone please tell me where on the motor the serial number is located?<br /><br />Thanks again.

Number doesnt seem right though ive been having trouble getting results off this chart.<br /> Number may appear on the top of mounting bracket<br />where it goes over the transom.

pending on the vintage, the serial number can be stamped on the block, either behind the throttle link arm or on the opposite side just above the rectifier (near the switch box)
