mercury 7.5 question

I bought a 14 foot aluminum boat with a seven point five mercury on the back. After cleaning the carburetor cleaning the fuel think I got it to run. It's a b**** to start sometimes and it only does six mile an hour. I was trying to figure out why it was going so slow and hiccuping every once in awhile. Took it out the other day and noticed there was some steam coming out with the water of the cooling system. Now I was told taking these motors apart is not cost effective. To me this would be a sign of a blown head gasket but I don't know these motors. So my question is do I put it on Craigslist for a hundred bucks or is there a way to fix it without spending 500 or so. It came with a trailer so I bought the motor, boat, and trailer for 350. What would you do?

Sounds like it needs at the very least a water pump, and hard starting is often to lean on the idle mixture screw.

Re: mercury 7.5 question

Sorry I forgot to add one thing. It's not the water pump. I left the spark plugs loose to see if there was any water was getting into the cylinders. As it is running water gets pushed past the bottom spark plug threads. The water pump is brand new. Even when I hook the motor up to a hose same thing still happens. I know for a fact water is getting into the cylinder. It's pretty impressive to see water dripping out past the spark plug lol.

Re: mercury 7.5 question

If I am understanding you correctly their should never be any water in a cylinder or leaking out of one. The cooling water flows around the cylinder and discharges at several points depending on how the motor is made. But never out of a spark plug hole.

?.... correct there should never be water in the cylinders..... can anyone tell me how the head is sealed on these motors. Is it a gasket or an o-ring or is there even a sealer?
