I have a 2002 6hp 4 stroke that is getting to be a problem child.
Complaint " hard to start" or "will not start" I go to the dock and it starts for me on the first pull.
Took it to the shop they could not duplicate the problem, it started first pull every time.
Yesteday it started acting up again, I brought it home set it up in the tank , and it was reluctan to start but did so after the 5th or 6th pull.
I ran the motor in the tank for 30 mins checking idle , throttleup response, full throttle idle down and back up again.
All good.
I shut the motor down for 30 mins, and could not get it to start, it is firing it will spit back through the carb. pulling the choke will flood it to where it will not fire at all, opening the throttle wide to clean it out will get it to a state where it will fire- put, put, put, but it will not pick up speed and eventually dies.
Oh Compression is good, but if you stick your finger over the plug hole intake is quite a deep vacuum.

What am I missing here?

I have the same motor. A dealer told me to take apart and boil out the carb. May try it this winter. I think it’s a carb problem, but I’m going to go at the issue by checking ignition, compression etc.
