Thank you for the reply, I do not know the age of the engine, and as for the serial no, the only one I can esee that may be the serial no is 37383. The ignition switch has 5 terminals with the letters A, E, B, G, F sorry this is as much info I have at the minute

thanks again DB

Re: Mercury 65hp four wiring harness.

On early MerControls, which is what this engine would use, On the back of the ignition switch it's:
A-Red
E-Salmon
B-Yellow
D-Black (from tach plug and harness)
F-White (from choke and from harness)

The colour-letter code for the entire engine plug is:
A-Red (+ From Batt)
B-Yellow (Neutral Start Switch)
C-Gray (Choke)
D-Black (-)
E-Salmon (not sure :p )
F-White (+ For Engine)
G-Brown (Tach)

Hope that helps,
Eric

Edit: Sorry Laddies, added some stuff to my post before seeing your post)

Re: Mercury 65hp four wiring harness.

On the older control, there will be a choke button switch on top of the control. A white wire from the ignition switch goes to one terminal on the choke switch, The grey wire goes to the other terminal on the choke switch. Salmon is motor off. In the motor it connects either to the magneto or to the switch box to kill engine depending on your ignition. I think on distributor models it might not even be used.

Re: Mercury 65hp four wiring harness.

Ireally should sit down and think of all the questions I need to ask, but guys I really mean a big thank you for all the assistance so far. With your help I have managed to get the engine to run (first time!!)I still have a couple of questions. Rick I take it the white wire comes from the white wire on the ignition? What procedure do I need to wire the tacho, and what type of tacho do I need. Being an older enine I am persuming it is a 2 stroke. That being the case what is the mixture. I also have an opportunity to convert the engine to run on propane gas I am assured by the people that convert the engines that it is a very successful conversion

Regards DB

Re: Mercury 65hp four wiring harness.

Yes, the white wire to the choke comes from the same terminal as the white wire on the ignition switch. To hook up the tach, you will have to run a wire from one of the yellow wires on the rectifier. Either yellow will work. The othe end of the wire you will connect to the signal terminal on the tach. Set the pole/pulse switch on the back of the tach to 12 pole/6 pulse. For tach instructions also see http://ww2.tflx.com/PDF/99320.pdf Teleflex tachs work good.
