This Mercury motor is 1965. Does it have a charging system?

I had a '68 Merc 650. It had a charging system. So I think the answer is yes.

I just purchased a 66' starcraft w/ 66' Merc 650 4cyl. I was told it did not come with a charging system. I went to wal-mart and bought a cheap $20 charger and use it after ever trip. That seems to work for me. Dont know if this will help you.

Depends on which model it is, you can probaly
put a volt meter on it, if you have one. Check volts before starting motor, then start
motor, in water of course. Use warmup lever,
and idle up. Check volts, if higher than
with motor off, I would have to say you have
a charging system. Hope I did'nt confuse you
to much, good luck and happy boating.

RR01

If your Merc has electric start then it's likely you have a charging system of some type. Do as RiverRat suggests. Assuming you have a battery, connect your volt meter to the battery (red lead to positive post, black lead to negative post)and read voltages in the manner RiverRat described. A working charging system should raise the battery voltage to 13-14 volts with engine running.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Walt
