With the engine running in neutral how much water is supposed to be coming out the back of the engine. Is it to be a trickle or like modern engines quite a flow of water at a constant pressure.

The engine is a 1967 twin.

Re: Mercury 60 6hp Twin

It'll blow some out the exhaust relief. Feel the side cover on the motor (exhaust manifold). If it's quite warm, you're not getting enough water flowing thru the powerhead.

It should be fairly cool to the touch, as should the block. There is no thermostat on this motor.

Underway you should get a pretty good stream of exhaust mixed with water out the relief.

If it's sat for quite a while you may want to replace the impeller. The vanes are quite small and they get curled up when in prolonged storage. Then they don't pump water so well.

A new impeller is about $13-15, take your Ser # to the local Merc dlr or check with your local NAPA store as they sell a line of aftermarket (Sierra Marine) parts.

HTH.....ed
