Mercury 50hp 1980- starter sheave worn & can't pull start, where to get part or fix?

I think I figured out how this is supposed to work and what the problem is. When pull starting the pawl flips around so I can't start the engine. I can still find pawls and a few other parts for this but I think I need to replace the Sheave (which is unavailable) - i can't see how I could fix this. I don't know if this circular piece which is worn out is separate or connected to a bigger piece. Any help would be appreciated, I would love to get out in the water before summer is over.

can you post the pic on photobucket as the website is struggling with pics. If you can post the motor serial number we maybe able to find what you are looking for.

p.s not sure on mercs but isn't the pawl meant to stop you from starting at high throttle?

Alright - I used photobucket and put the link here, it's pretty obvious where the metal has sheared off. The serial# is 05632404, model# 1050200.

I am new to boating but the pawl in this case seems to be a football shaped small piece of metal that swings forward to catch the flywheel when pull-starting the motor. Seems like a lot of Mercurys have 3 but this one has just one. Thanks for any help!

ok im hoping a merc expert jumps in here. Im looking at a 50hp 4 cylinder diagram on a site called marine engine and from the explosion diagram that looks like your starter if the picture you posted is the bottom of the rope starter. In the diagram it shows the black piece 94962 lever is the other way up. like its meant to clear the paw rather than being jammed into it. Is there any chance this has been assembled incorrectly.

like I said im hoping for a merc expert to take a look as im looking at a explosion diagram is not a manual.

I think that black piece is in there correctly, the pawl is turned around in this photo because that is what happens because of that damage to the circular piece. The black plastic piece pushes the pawl out when the cord is pulled and retracts back when the line is rewinding. I think I need a new metal circular piece is that is possible, but on that exploded diagram you mention I don't see it as separate, it looks like it must be part of the whole "sheave" apparatus, the #4 I think it was. That piece is discontinued of course so I would need to find a salvage of that, or get a whole new starter mechanism that would work and replace it all, or if possible that circular metal piece that is damaged could be replaced - I'm just not sure it is separate.
