I saw a post regarding the shift shaft seal replacement started by Skatopia. Looks like without the Mercury special tool the bushing takes a beating to get out. Before I gnarl up the bushing does anybody have a clean way to get it out of the lower unit. I am leaning towards heat and a plumbers pipe wrench?

I took a spare deep socket that was smaller than the bushing and cut it off at the bottom so that there were 2 small pieces sticking down that fit in the slots of the bushing. This allows you to turn out the bushing without removing the shift-shaft, use some penetrating oil before starting the project.

You made the special tool. Very good. I might try something similare if need be. Hate to spend as much time making the tool as removing the bushing is why I thought pipe wrench and heat. Did yours have one or two seals? I do not see how it could pass a pressure test with only one seal. Seems like two seals are needed as is normal in most outboards. One for vacuum one for pressure. My seal looks to be new but won't hold pressure at all. Preciate your reply
