Re: Mercury 4hp - float setting

Assuming this is a 2-cyl:

Float should be set 5/64" - 7/64" above the casting rim when inverted (upside - down).

Dartboy - I would appreciate you confirming something for me. In the carb, there's a little spring that acts on the float. Does it push the float down, or hold it up? Thanks!

There don't seem to be many of these 2-cylinder 4hp engines left around. They were not particularly loved when new, which I think has a lot to do with it. But they're a good, high-tech engine when they're set up right. I fixed up my brother's one which he uses on his sailboat. I made up some notes when I did the work on it. If you want them, email me at paul.moir@ns.sympatico.ca and I'll send them.

Breakdowns online, click on Mercury (right) and then 40,4 Gnat

Re: Mercury 4hp - float setting

Thanks paul for your reply.

Having checked the website for the engine and Ser.No. it appears this engine is a Gnat (2 cyl), but the carb is different.

Mine has not an adjustment for the fuel mixture (mine is fixed by jets) and mine has three levers for 1) throttle fitted horizontal 2) choke fitted vertical 3) one for a setting 'run to cold' ?? fitted horizontal midway between choke and throttle.

Paul I've just noticed you're on the east not the west side of CA.

I've looked all through the engines of 4hp carbs and none are as mine.

I mentioned on an earlier topic sometime ago, on the manufacture plate its made in Belgium.

Dartboy - The 'run to cold' adjustment is the mixture adjustment I was refering to. I belive mine also has the throttle fitted horizontal as well - weak memory here. The tab on the mixture adjustment should simply pull off giving you the ability to completely rotate the control.

Darn! I love it when Europeans (or Britains, etc) get that one wrong. See your email for details. :)
