Help. I just got a Merc 40 4hp (GNAT) that is in great shape. The engine has not been used in many years. Put fuel in and it started right up but no evidence of water pumping through engine.
Shut down and pulled lower unit, found pump impeller in pieces (looks like dry rot). Cleaned everything up including running water hose at flush port. Clean stream of water from copper tube leading to water pump. Installed new impeller and pump insert. Bolted all together and ran motor. No water from the 8 exhaust holes at rear of lower unit. Can not find a "****" hole so I guess exhaust holes are the only water verification. Motor was run with water pick up inserted in 5 gal pail and no prop. Could it be that there is too much turbulence for the pump to "suck water"?
What have I missed doing ? Thanks for any help on this issue.
