mercury 40 4 cy impeller

when i run my mercury on the garden hose pipe. the water don't seem to fire out until about 20 seconds. do i need a new impeller fitted? the outboard don't seem to over heat,and if i do need to replace impeller, is it a big job. i do have the manual.

Since the water passes through the engine before coming out of the pee tube a slight delay is normal. A garden hose and flusher can give you a false reading on the impeller as the water pressure will force the water past the pump. How does it pump when in the lake, or whatever? If you don't have a problem there I would guess that the impeller is ok. It's a good idea to change it every couple years though, just to be safe.<br />****

thanks for the reply, another thing with this outboard, its the tilt, very hard to lift up off the water, its like a oil dramper system. the only way i could do, which i have not tied yet, is run it at about 10knots and press the tilt lever, so the water will force it up.

hi bw17 is right but sounds like you do not have power trim but the good ole manual , usually takes a little ooomph to pull it up. But *I* would definatly not try to lift it up underway as that would be a good way to get hurt......just an opinion ..
