mercury 4 stroke no forward gear

2011 mercury 4 stroke epi 60 hp. really good shape until i was fishing and put it in neutral then when i tried to go forward it didnt go. it seems that whatever pushes transmission (for lack of right word) into forward isnt doing its job. HELP?

...as in goes into forward gear and boat/prop won't move or just won't go into forward gear?

Is this a tiller model or a remote model with a steering wheel.

Please post the serial #.

Check to see if shift cable moves and is connected at the motor.-----Does reverse work ?
