MERCURY 4 CYL. 150 HP?

Does anyone know if Mercury ever made a 4 cyl 150 or 140 hp outboard and if so what years they were sold? <br /><br />thanks

Mark 58 may have been 45 hp and that was the biggest 4 in line. They went to the I6 for 60 hp which wound up at 150 hp wearing the blue band immediately followed by the V6's and it was downsized to 115 because the V6 came in at 135.<br /><br />Today there is the 125 4 cyl and above that are V6's.<br />Mark

Mercury also made 50,65,75,80,85,100,and 115 in 4 Cyl.

Mercury made some experimental V4s back in the 1950s, using the 20-cubic inch 2-cylinder blocks as a basis. They tried lots of designs at the time before settling into the inline designs that would take them well into the 1970s. The V4s were never actually produced....<br />- Scott

Hey rickster. Boy am I having a memory loss. Sorry for the dis-info. Laughing My *** off for my stupidity.<br /><br />I even had one of the 85 hp I4's back in '84ish time frame. Boy I can't believe what I said......talk about tunnel vision. For some reason my brain was '50 oriented.<br /><br />Hey Clams, don't know why it double posted. Now about it all being wrong....what's wrong with the rest of it? I knew a guy who had a blue band 150 on a 16' Hydrosport and I had one of the I6 115's on a Ranger, and the rest of it I got out of Merc/Mariner sales brochures......now I will give you that my sales brochures are not the latest, but as compared to the '50's they can be classed as "today".<br /><br />Mark

Mark, I'm using a 1977 850 now and its running better than ever. Something I find interesting is I see more of the old Mercs on the lake I frequent than I see the newer ones.

Hi Mark,<br /><br />Aside from ignoring the 44ci 50hp and the 80/85hp I4's, you forgot the later model 115/125 hp I4 loopers. <br /><br />Further, when the V6 came out at 150hp (not 135), the inline 150 was tagged a 140, not 115.<br /><br />LATER in 1982 when propshaft ratings came into play THEN the V6 150 was tagged a 135 and the I6 140 was tagged a 115.<br /><br />-W

10-4 on all that. Ok I skipped over some of it.<br /><br />Speaking of the 44ci 50 which was lowered to 40 hp when they came out with their 3 cyl mid range line, it's amazing how long that engine has lasted. If my memory serves me that started out as 40 hp back in the 50's; was cross flow charged and remained for 50 years. Yeah I know it had lots of improvements, but still the basic engine remained surrounded by loopers.<br /><br />Now that you mention it, I do vaguely remember the downsizing to 140 hp and I do remember the 135 V6 hitting the market.<br /><br />I just didn't know that (when) Merc decided to get legal and prop rate their stuff.<br /><br />Looking back again, in the 50's and 60's I was an OMC fan because OMC seemed to push a boat harder for a given hp. I think OMC was prop rated at that time and Merc power head rated. <br /><br />We were running green and then brown Johnsons in 25 and 30 hp and could stay up with the Merc Mark 55 rated at 40 hp....as I recall.<br /><br />Thanks for setting me straight and allowing the viewers to get accurate info.<br /><br />Mark

Yes, that venerable 4 cylinder crossflow was a twinkle in Big Carls eye before WWII, and finally made production post-war in 1949 as a 40 ci unit. In 1958 it was upgraded to 44ci, and remained virtually the same internally until its demise in 1995 (or '96?) <br /><br />Because of the sheer volume of total production, I still see them all the time. Mercury built its initial empire squarely on the back of that motor and it's big brother the inline 6.<br /><br />-W

There are those that would say that Carl and Charlie only designed one motor - the 20-cube 10hp KE7 twin. All other motors were basically derivatives of that up until they built the first V6s in the 1970s. For the 4-cylinder 40-cube KF9 they literally grafted two 20-cubers together. For the 6-cylinder Mark 75 they literally grafted two Mark 55 blocks together. They would scale up or down that basic design to get their smaller and larger motors. Granted, that's a bit simplified, as there was much more to it than that, but Merc was famous/notorious for their ability to modularize motors. Lots of commonality between motors within a "bore family", often with 2, 4 and 6 cylinder models all sharing the same pistons and rods.<br /> Find a copy of "Iron Fist" - it explains a lot...<br />- Scott
