I have a 1985 35 hp merc. It runs pretty good but i have notcied a few things and am dumb to motors so need a little help. First, i tried to put it in reverse and the motor starting jumping kinda hopping so i stopped. Then i notcied that when i open it up sometimes it will rev up real high and then kinda die down like it's gonna die out and then i rev it down and it straightens up. I haven't changed the spark plugs yet could that be it. We wanna try to go to our fishing hole thats 5 mile out and i'm reluctant to do that and get stuck. But i don't wanna be limited to a motor i spent 600.00 for and that all in all runs pretty dang good ( most of the time it will start in 1 pull after i start it the 1st time). Is there any general maintnece i can do to keep it in good condition and running good? Also do i have to oil the prop inside, sorry i just don't know much on motors.
