I am on the cusp of purchasing a 2002 30hp Mercury 2 stroke and was wondering if there are any relatively easy upgrades for this motor to achieve more HP.
I have seen the 25-30hp upgrade, but was wondering how to get more out of the 30.

Also, feedback on this motor is also appreciated.
It is a 30 EHO 2 stroke.

Thank you!

I have the same motor. This motor is the same as the 40hp 2cyl 2 stroke made from 1994-2002. This is a large 30hp of about 650cc where as most 30hp 2 strokes are about 500cc. What I have read is it is not worth the time or money to increase the hp from 30 to 40 because it already has the same torque as the 40 so the hp gain would not be very noticeable. I'm new to outboards too so I've been putting in as much time as possible learning about outboards in general and this outboard in particular. My best guess is our time and money would be better spent on having our motors well tuned, maintained and having the correct pitch on a prop that's in good condition.

Thanks for the feedback. I did move forward and purchase the motor. It runs and idles a bit rough, and I'm pretty sure the carb needs to be cleaned.
Any insight on this would be appreciated.
Alanfox55, what benefit is the 650CC over the 500CC if the HP is the same?
Tyst67, I'd be interested in hearing your insight on getting the most out of this outboard.

OK keep in mind that there is more that I don't know than I do so everything I say is to the best of my knowlage. Our 30hp is the same motor as the 40hp 2cyl 2stroke built from 1994 to 2002 with some minor differences. The horse power rating will be at the top of the rpm range where I would think you would be most likely to notice a difference between the 30 and 40. The torque numbers will be lower and in a range that is used by the average user most of the time and where your likely not to notice a difference between the two. This is my best guess but I would like to know more too.

To get the most out the motor I would say to learn about it as much as posible to start with. That would include getting a service manual, reading forums, asking questions and watching video's. Fresh fuel with additive, regular decarbon, good spark, good compression, clean and properly adjusted carb and good prop with proper pitch for your boat and use. I would include good maintinence like regular drain and fill of lower end and checking/replacing the impeller on a regular basis.
