I recently inherited a 3.9 HP Mercury, there is not a serial # on it that I can Find. I disasembled it, cleaned etc, an started it. I have determined so far that it needs a water pump impeller and lower end seals.

Can any one assist me with the following.
Id what year it is?
How do I remove the impeller?
Any other tips that a novice, may do to fix it up etc?

I hope to use it to push a small flat bottom & or for manuvering a sail boat in & out of marina. :(

Re: Mercury 3.9 HP, Identification & maint.

Hi,
THe Ser No is located between the thumb screws that hold the motor to the boat on a plate. There are 2 nuts holding the LU on 1 is in the front of the LU in a notch, the other is under the cavitation plate resessed in a hole above the prop. Put the motor in F gear before takeing the unit off. They made the motor all through the 60s. Nice little motors.
...have fun...corm
