My 1986 Mercury 25HP Tiller manual outboard won't start. For the last 15 seasons it has started without incident every opening day like a charm. This year it started right up and took me to my favorite spot where I fished for an hour. Unfortunately it refused to start and I had to be towed in.
I have:
changed the spark plugs (first time)
drained the fuel line
put new gas/oil in tank
shook the fuel filter
pulled until my arm hurts and nothing starts it up
What should I check next? Thanks

Hi JAW
The first thing to do is obtain a manual. There are three things you motor needs to operate Compression, spark at the right time and fuel. We need to figure out which one or more is missing. Take an evening and read up,rest your arm and I guess we'll putting a new starter rope in it too. Test for compression, test for spark. let us know what you find and we'll go from there.

It could be something as simply as your kill switch....that is if it has one. Remember to check the obvious, most simple things first.

Alcan definitely has you headed in the right direction...good luck and let us know what you find...

Walt
