That big bearing housing in front of the prop is threaded.---Left hand thread too.---Special tool used to remove it.---Depending on your shop you might be able to make that tool with some pipe.

The tool is the prop washer, tap outer housing off and you have it...

Re: Mercury 25hp gears

Like Texmark has stated, The big washer between the prop and the prop shaft should have a stainless cup and a metal piece that can be removed from it. This is what is used to remove the left hand threaded nut/carrier bearing from the LU. By placing that adapter on the shaft backwards and puting the prop back on the shaft with the motor in neutral you can turn the prop CCW and it should remove the carrier bearing nut for removal of the prop shaft and the Gear, clutch dog. When all done make sure that that metal part removed from the thrust washer is replace back in the stainless as it was before. Otherwise it will lock up in the nut again and cause more troubles.

I have managed to get it off. I used one of my old sockets and used a hand grinder with a cutting disc
