Ok, right now I own a Mercury blackmax from 96' which is 200hp and is mounted on a 23' wellcraft excel walkaround.

I took it recently to a mechanic and he said the motor is good and the compression is still good but it could break off the boat at any time. It has a broken pivot, after researching I saw that it is a common problem for the pivot thing to rust and an aluminum one is now available.

I thought about just replacing it but I'm considering getting a newer motor since we are planning on taking longer trips now and would want a newer more reliable motor. The old motor looks old, we are possibly planning on getting a bigger boat for next summer and I'm sure the motor will do a difference when it comes to selling the boat since the boat looks brand new.

So, I found a 225hp mercury EFI from 2000 on the Classifieds; the seller wants $4500 for ir OBO and comes with the gages. Motor looks new from what I can see, he upgraded to bigger motors now.

Are these motors any good? Fuel consumption? I'd like your opinions on what I should do.
Thanks!

See if you can have it checked out as the EFI engines need a little extra TLC vs a carb engine. The 225 is a 3.0 liter and your 200 is a 2.5 liter. The 3.0 EFI will be just a tad better on fuel than the 200hp. They are a pretty good engine but you have to stay up with the maintenance on it due to fuel issues..

For sure I'll have it checked out if I'm ready to buy it.

What problems do these have?
I'm planning on removing the oil injector and just mix the oil with the Gas as I do right now.
The Blackmax also has the oil thing removed and oil is mixed with the fuel.

Really no need to remove as the 3.0liters have a low,low oil pump failure rate due to its driven off bottom of crank. You just need to change filters regularly and run a additive like Quickleen to keep injector pintles clean..
