Re: Mercury 225 optimac 2002 info
Ron: Can you be a little more specific? Are you asking what to be looking for in a pair of used Mercury Optimax 225 hp motors?
I would want to have any used saltwater engine checked out very carefully by a first class marine mechanic--including compression test and an in water examination with the engines running. I would preferably want to take a boat out that they're installed on. I would also want to drain the lower units and inspect the grease (looking for water intrusion). Then, I'd have a pressure and vacuum test of the lower unit to make sure the seals are okay. If these engines can be electronically scanned, I would want all trouble codes checked and all info possible gathered.
These are trouble free motors, but you need to be very careful. Any parts and labor on those engines is very expensive. And many of these twin engine installations have mega hours on them when they're used in South Florida.
