Have 2002 90 hp merc injected 2nd owner , oil consumption is too high, i am past cert. marine mechanic. (omc tohatsu )I need adjustment procedure for linkage.Mixture is to rich at idle causing missing and hard starting.I have 2 marks on the pump lever and one on the pump casting. which one do you align with at idle position.Rod is extended out very far ?. thought is dealer set mix rich at delivery for break in .
PS: almost 3 gallons oil at 90 gallons fuel

You have the roughest idling outboard model ever made. It's something you'll have to live with. All Merc 90 triples idle something awful. They fudged the idle mixture on the top carb to smooth it out, but then it bogs on acceleration. Set all three carbs the same, about 1 1/4 turns out plus or minus depending on where you're at. Ignore the middle mark on the pump arm. Set it at the lowest mark at idle. Some oils smoke less than others. Synthetics seem to smoke least. Mercury's Premium Plus is my recommendation. When starting, leave the throttle at idle. Don't give it any throttle til it fires.

Idle is not that bad ,after it warms up it does fine acceleration is great and smooth, oil consumption is concern.
