I own a 95 Merc 200 2.5 liter. In july the engine blew while running at 4400 RPM. While investigating repair and/or new block, I heard from several mechanics that the 2.5 liter had a reoccurring problem with the engine blowing, especially the #1 cylinder, such as what happened with mine. It was theorized that the flywheel on the 2.5 was too heavy, causing stress on the #1 cylinder. Apparently they did not have this problem with the 2.4 liter 200, built in 88 and 89. Does anyone know of additional info on this subject?

------------------

Re: Mercury 200

NEVER HEARD OF THAT YOU NEED TO FIND SOMEONE TO LOOK AT THE PISTON AND TELL YOU WHY THE PROBLEM OCCURED MOST COMMON FAILURE ON #1 CYL IS A OVERHEAT PROBLEM WHICH WOULD BE ON THE EXHAUST SIDE A LEAN CONDITION WOULD BE ON INTAKE SIDE OR IF TOP OF PISTON EATTEN AWAY THIS A POSSIBLE IGNITION PROBLEM BUT AS FOR THE FLYWHEEL I DONT THINK SO

Hi Bugbuster,
I agree with Mercman. It sounds like too much
alochol in the gas to me. If your H2O pump is good.
...have fun...corm
