Mercury 200 Optimax Year 2002

I am thinking of buying a rib with a mercury optimax 200 year 2002 with 250hrs. It works perfectly fine however i have been reading a lot of posts on the internet from frustated mercury optimax owner's especially between 1999 and 2002 claiming all kind of problems.

Should i stay away from it?

Any input would be much appreciated.

Free bump for you...I feel your pain with non-response. I don't really have much input other than a guy that I worked with back in say '02 and '03 had one on a Ranger and he was a jackass anyway, but he complained about that thing all the time. I guess it has a CEL (check engine light) and it was on a lot. I mean, it's a boat so lots of stuff goes wrong. But relative to the gas-burning counterparts on the road (cars) they have way too many issue in my opinion. I don't want to slam Merc here, but I'd be very curious to know what others think of their non-merc HPDI motors or four strokes of other brands.

I'd like to get an optimax motor at some point but I'd be leery of them until I knew more about their general reliability...as you seem as well.
