Does anyone have any experience with a 200 re-sleeved engine? The cylinder wall was scored.

Might I expect future problems with this motor?

Thx
Arc

Re: Mercury 200 EFI Question

hello
with some of the merc blocks they were chrome plated bores. in the early 1990's there was an outfit that would rechrome them for about 1250 dollars. so the fix was to sleeze them and rebore them and use the piston and ringset for cast iron bore. never had a problem with them. chrome bores was a wonderful idea but sometimes the longevity was questionable.so to answer your question. if you have a problem it will most likly be caused by something other than the sleeve. almost always are.

Re: Mercury 200 EFI Question

how deep are the scores?????? I have had several Merc Techs tell me they do not last. Resleeve or Rebore makes no difference. They will come off the rebuild OK, but after 100 hrs...... they will start getting out of balance and shake themselves to death.... On my newer motors that have a jug go bad, I just hone and hone, micro it, and get the right size piston (std/.015/.030,ect). The motors are worth so much money, that it makes you risk redoing it..... Here lately, I have been buying 2-3 year old motors that check out perfectly...... some have had 100 hrs, some 300, but if they are perfect, they will run a long time.........

Re: Mercury 200 EFI Question

hello
if its an inline motor especially the later 3 and 4 cyl and the sleeve is not done by a competent professional and secured in place, yes they will and can pull loose. I know of several motors that have been resleeved with over 2000 hours on them. most just depends on who machined it. if the place does auto and some marine stay away. I am lucky in my area there is a shop that does marine outboard and only outboard. no stern drive or auto machine work. he was an autherized sleeve center for OMC up untill 99 or so. anyway he has been sleeving and racing oil burners for the better part of 40 years. I hope he does not retire for at least another 2 years. by that time I intend to be doing something else :) :) . but if done properly there is no worries with sleeving. most people dont have the micrometer adjustable rigid hones nessasary to hone .015" and keep the bore straight. I was a machinist for many years as was my father so its difficult to BS with me on machine work. especially when I still have most my dial bores and measuring equipment :) .

Re: Mercury 200 EFI Question

It's a 6 cyl model. The dealer has sent it out to a marine repair place that does resleeving. I do not kno how deep the score(s) are.

I'm just pretty uncomfortable with a motor in this condition. It's a shame as the boat is really nice. :) There's always something wrong. :)

Thx for all your input.

Arc

Re: Mercury 200 EFI Question

Down here in Dallas, we have no competent machine shops. The only two around here do a variety of engine applications (I like the idea of a guy that does only outboards). Rodbolt is right about the tolerancing. (yes rodbolt I have my inside mic's too...)
