i have a mercury 20 hp yr about 19 70? i have a manual with it but i need a new impeller having problems removing the gear housing , please note i have had the motor for 3 yrs and only just tested it it starts fine but no water ,i need a new impeller. so i presume that the gear housing is rusted on the rest of the motor, anyone have any ideas on how to remove it from the rest of the motor without smashing it to pieces.
thanks for any advice

Re: mercury 20 hp

No reason to smash.Make sure that you remove all the bolts and nuts.
The shift linkage under the carb might need to be unhooked.
A rubber mallet. After you remove all the bolts and nut hit it with the rubber,It should drop down.If not then you missed something.
In extreme conditions(real rare) it will drop down about a 1/2"Then stop even after the shift linkage is loose and all the nuts/bolts are loose. Then it 's possible the top splines where it goes into the crank are twisted.
Always post Ser# and Mod# And pics always help too. Hope this helped.J
