Picked up a Boat/Engine from a neighbor (childhood friend)
Engine: 20Hp XD Long Shaft Electric Start S/N B142233... Boat: 15ft. Gregor Baja Special...
Engine sat outside for 10-15 years unstarted (no spark upon first firing).
Upon DVA diagnostic, stator out of spec (less than 100V DVA).
Replaced stator and switchbox with CDI Electronics parts.
Got engine started in the backyard with ear muffs after this.
Rebuilt carburetor with Sierra rebuild kit (carb is: Walbro WMC-13 integrated fuel pump).
Took the boat out with my wife, it took off with loads of power, very quick to plane.
Then heard this BRRRR.... then the engine could never get into the high RPM range after this.
The problem seems to be RPM related, not load related, when the engine unloads from wind letting up (no throttle movement)
and RPM climbs, it will start a sputtering noise with the engine seemingly running smooth in the background.
With and increase in throttle position, the sputtering frequency will increase.
On the threshold the sputtering will be low frequency (1-2 sputter / second).
Also, it misses when spooled down to idle/low speed, it sounds like it's running on one cylinder (Boat Vibrating).
But, just over idle and up to about 50% of the RPM range it runs very smooth and seems to operated reliably.
The ignition coils are very likely the original equipment from 1987 (ordered new ones today from iBoats).
I have also replaced the spark plug wires and spark plugs.
The only ignition equipment that is old and still on the engine are the trigger coil, ignition coils, and rectifier.
I have checked the fuel line for blockage, and cleaned the fuel filter, no blockage was found, fuel is free flowing.
My only theories are:
1. Somehow the stator went bad, high speed coil not operating or factory defect.
2. When stator jumps to high speed coil, voltage is high, and possibly the potting material in the ignition coils are shorting out at high voltage.

However, this wouldn't explain why it idles ruff, and runs rough a very low rpm.
I have heard the engine run extremely smooth before the failure so I know it's capable of very smooth operation.
Does anyone have any experience with this engine.
Thank you for your help.

-John
