I have a 1987 2.2 hp. I have heard it is the same as the 3.3 hp, but the 2.2has a restrictor plate between the carb and engine. If i remove this restrictor plate will this motor will still run safely? Do i need a new main jet? or can it be run without the restrictor the way it is? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It depends on whether it was a Mercury made by Yamaha or Mercury made by Tohatsu. If it was made by Tohatsu you can buy a new carb to make it a 3.5.

So how about if it was made by yamaha - is removing the restrictor plate still good? Who made the better motor - How do you tell who made motor? how much does the little motor weigh? Do they have a reputation as good motors - i know where one is - suppose to be like new for $300.00 - was looking for a good motor to run on a canoe. Sorry guess i got carried away here - any help much appreciated - thanks. pappylo

I also have a 2.2 Mercury, around 1984, looks like it is made by Tohatsu. My Seloc manual shows that the bore and stroke is the same up to 3 hp, so I doubt changing the carb and removing the retrictor plate will give you 3.5 hp.
But horsepower ratings seem to be all over the map in these smaller sizes, sometimes it's measured at the prop other times at the crankshaft. The 2.2 is at least as strong as my old Johnson 3 hp I owned years ago.
I use my 2.2 on a square back canoe, very reliable, starts easily. However, it is 1 cylinder so it shakes at low rpm, enough to rattle the whole boat, the motor is constantly trying to turn itself because of the jack hammer effect from the 1 cylinder firing. The motor is fine though at higher speeds, it only weighs 28 lbs. To do it all again, I would look for another older Johnson or Evinrude 3 hp 2 cylinder 2 stroke in good condition, not much heavier and a lot smoother.
