I think you could likely retrofit something, somehow, if you’re stuck…have a look and compare the coils from the slightly later models that came along just after the 2.2. Like the merc 2.5/3/3, Mariner 2.5.3.3 and the identical tohatsu version too. Almost identical things to yours.
All that said…I’ve had half a dozen of these things and their later variants as above, over the years. Never had any issues with the coil failing on any of them. It’s likely you’ve found her failed by testing and confirming as much with a resistance test…but if not…I’d maybe do so or check elsewhere for the fault. Like the ht lead or even the plug. Even the stop switch circuit being to blame or shorting somewhere, might be just as likely or more even, than the coil. Best of luck either way. Great wee engines

Yeah. Could or might not be…but worth a check. All the way end to end of the circuit.
It could be the coil…but if it’s not been absolutely diagnosed and tested as such…I’d urge you to look to the simple things first. 99% of the time a old trusty 2 stroke like this doesn’t start…it’s a fuel issue..the other percent is going to be a plug or lead issue. Especially the the particular way the lead and plug boot twists its way onto the plug on these particular engines there.
