I have a 1997 Mercury 175hp EFI SN: OG507555 on an 18' StarCraft Tournament 180. Runs and idles great, but suddenly it will lose all power under load and only idle speed. This has left me limping home in the North Atlantic too many times for my comfort.
The strange thing about this is that engaging the trim motor appears to fix the problem momentarily and gives full power enough to get up on plane.
It has a brand new fuel filter. Fresh supreme gas. Does not sputter, but suffers complete and sudden power loss, only to return when shifted to neutral and back into gear, or when trim motor engaged.
Is it possible there's a high voltage at the fuel pump causing it to shut down? Any ideas welcome.
I have checked all grounds and cleaned any that appeared corroded. Mostly they are in excellent condition.
