I have a 1985 Mercury XR2 150 HP. Ever since I bought the boat in 1987, the engine has stalled when I'm in gear at idle speed (trolling speed).

It also seems to be leaking gas when just sitting out of gear in idle. You can see a thin gas slick around the motor for about 3-5 feet in diameter. Are the stalling and gas leak related?

The fuel pump was recently replaced and it got better for about a week. Now it's stalling off and on. It coughs with kind of a chhhha sound right before it dies.

When it stalls, the ball is soft because there is no gas in it. Once I pump the ball until it's hard again, the engine will start and run just fine.

It's sucking in air from somewhere. I tightened all the joints between the gas tank, fuel hose, the ball, and the engine connector. I saw someone mentioned an anti-siphon valve in the gas tank pick-up-tube in another posting. Could this be the problem? How will I recognize the anti-siphon valve?
