Hi Guys,

Just a query about my outboard, its a late 80's model, USA build/style with the gear selector on the tiller arm. I went boating for 2 nights before xmas, and well, first night was a fizzer. The barb broke off the fuel line fitting that clips onto the motor, so i needed to get towed back, thankfully it was only a few hundred meters from the boat ramp.

Second night, we went out, and all was good. Only drama was with the new hose/fittings i got, when i squeeze the primer bulb, fuel sprays out from between the fitting and the motor. I am not sure why. I have double checked the fittings i purchased, they are the mercury/yamaha fittings. I also tried a second fitting that i purchased, in case of a faulty one or something the first time. Any ideas where to start looking.

It does not leak during operation of the boat. But i still dont find it as a safe thing to have happening when on the water.

Cheers.

On that size engine the fuel line is probably 5/16", you said meters in distance so 25.4 mm per inch to convert my dimensions. Fuel lines for larger engines are 3/8". Some squeeze bulbs, adapters, hose barbs and all that stuff may have a dual step connection where you can use either diameter of hose. Check that and ensure that you have a reliable clamp on the device you install in the line. You aren't squeezing up all that much pressure...a few pounds per square inch, but it doesn't take much for fuel with a low surface tension to flow out of any crevice it can find. Tighten up your clamps where your line and the appliance/engine input connection meet.

:welcome: to iboats

Maybe the first damaged fitting also damaged the hose fitting. I would suggest finding another complete fuel hose or another fitting

You are talking the quick connect right?

If the fuel fitting on the motor is damaged, it should also be replaced along with a new fitting for the hose. Chances are that if you can get fuel to squirt out of the connections, then there is a good chance that it will cause a air leak also. This could cause a lean burn of fuel to the motor and cause more damage to the motor. The after market fittings can be trouble at times. If all else fails, you can just run the fuel hose to the filter conection and clamp it there to eliminate the connection on the motor, and disconnect the fuel hose at the tank when needed. JMO

ok, so yes, its 5/16" hose. i am talking between the quick connect fitting and nipple bit sticking from the motor. its not around the clamps.

if i prime the bulb when the hose isnt on the motor, it doesnt leak at all.
it is something in the connection assembly on the motor i guess.

something stupid, can you buy a replacement quick connector thing to replace the bit on the motor if it is broken ?
ill take a look at the coupling on the motor and inspect it and see if i can see any damage to it.

cheers.

Look at the engine part of the connector. If it's not damaged then the problem is the seal in the tank hose connector. There are two, one for when disconnected and the other for when connected. Yes you can buy a matched set, which I would recommend, and you can also buy replacement hose if the hose is too short on the engine to put on a new connector. Gas line at an auto parts store works fine unless you have a boat that the USCG or other agency specifies a marine rated hose only. On a 15 hp I seriously doubt you would enter into that category.

Look herein at engine parts and maybe iboats sells what you want or just google outboards parts online. Plenty of reliable suppliers.
