I had to get a new ignition for my Mercury 1500 thunderbolt since the key broke for my original and i got what i thought was right which was a push to choke 3 postion switch but it has 6 terminals while the original only has 5 but i cant seem to find a 5 terminal switch. so i wired it up and left one terminal free and now it will try to start but wont turn over at all i am thinking the wiring is wrong.
Can anyone help me with where each wire should be or were to find a switch that will fit.
thank you.

Re: Mercury 1500 thunderbolt 150 hp ignition.

The original ign switch had a seperate choke button. Is that the difference in number of terminals? If so, you can leave the "C" terminal unused and continue to use the original choke button or switchover to the push to choke.

Wire colors and ign switch connections should be:

White - Ign accessories +12Vdc - terminal I
Black - Ground- terminal G or M
Yellow - starter Solenoid power - terminal S
Grey - Choke power- Terminal C
Red - +12VDC - Terminal B
Orange - Ign killer wire (used on your motor)- Terminal M

Does that get it?

If you have a 5 wire switch it has the distributer ignition and orange is not used in the internal motor harness. To make a 6 terminal work wire it as so:
B-red
A-white
C-grey
S-yellow
M-black
M-orange if in harness

I've tried wiring up the switch, however, I'm still having the same problem. The motor cranks but does nothing. It sounds like the engine isn't getting fuel but nothing appeared clogged when I checked. Any suggestions? Could it not be firing for some reason?

With the ignition switch in the on postion check the switchbox on the motor to see if you have 12 volts on the white terminal and the red one.Next when cranking see if you have spark.
