About to buy a 20' Alumaweld fishing boat.Is there is an advantage to choosing one over the other? Also, the boat dealers all badmouth Merc and push Yamaha or Honda. I'm lifelong Merc user. Have Mercury fixed the earlier Optimax problems? Keep in mind I'm buying and outboard/tiller/jet pump 150hp

Optimax is now a very reliable outboard, fuel consumption figures are as good as or better than most four strokes.
Dealers who badmouth anything dont get my business, if you cant sell your product without rubbishing the oposition then you should'nt be in the business of selling

Thanks Whayley
Do you know anyone who's used the Optimax with the jet pump vs. prop? This is something the older 2 strokes were very good at.

Does Merc sell the opti with the jet pump? If so, it'll be fine, if not just give them a call and see if there's a problem. I have a carburated outboard with jet and it's a gas guzzler. You'd be better off with a "dfi" motor in that respect. ;)

Re: Mercury 150 Jet Pump-Optimax or EFI

My local dealer turns the Optimax into a jet pump. He also has a bunch of the carburated ones to pick from. Seems like the carbs are still preferred. I'm mostly concerned that the "dfi" model will work as a pump without sacrificing too much power or performance. Some power is lost in the pump but maybe the savings in fuel make it acceptable. And also that Mercury has worked out the earlier bugs with this model line. The yami dealer calls it a time bomb. I'll take Whaleys advice and not spend my money there.
