mercury 15 hp help?

i have a 1980 (i believe ) 15 hp two stroke mercury 15hp serial : OD168313 . i was driving across the lake and then all of a sudden i hear the engine rev high and the boat slowed way down , almost to a stop . i checked the prop and it was still there . it goes into gear (forward and reverse) and will even push it as long as i let it go by itself and not give it gas or it will just rev up and not go anywhere. any ideas ??? thanks kendall

Search Results - Crowley Marine

Sounds like you may have hit something or the prop just gave up and spun. You can draw a witness mark across the hub, run it in the water, in gear again and see if the witness marks are still aligned or out of line, indicating that the prop has spun.

Sounds like you may have hit something or the prop just gave up and spun. You can draw a witness mark across the hub, run it in the water, in gear again and see if the witness marks are still aligned or out of line, indicating that the prop has spun.

Yes sounds like a spun prop hub.
