Mercury 1400 ignition

I'm trying to fix my brothers 78, 140hp mercury outboard. I seem to have power and ground to the ignition box and power to the dist. No power to coil. How can I check the ignition trigger and box?

well been playin with the thing, and now i have some spark. it'll jump a 1/4 in outof the coil wire but just barely jump out of the plug wires. So its way too weak. Anybody know how to check the coil? Bought a book but its about worthless. Everything I wanted to know about it just says take to the dealer.
