I am new to the forum and tried using the search function, but could find very little about my engine. I've been tasked with trying to sell some stuff for a family member and one of those items is a 1972 Caravelle boat with a Mercury 1250 SS Thunderbolt 125hp outboard engine. I am curious if these are valuable or rare engines? I was told the engine was running before the boat was put up about 10 years ago. From what little info I was able to find, I believe this engine was only made in 1969? If anyone could shed any light on this subject for me or give me an idea of the value of one of these engines, I would greatly appreciate it!

Very few shops will work on these older motors.-------Therefor little value to the general public.----Collectors wait till they get them for next to nothing.-------But each area is different.---------Look on craiglist / e-bay for similar motors.

Thanks for the info! I tried doing searches on both Ebay and Craigslist, but was unsuccessful finding anything. I was just curious if these engines were sought after for vintage racing or were collectable.

Yes and no. Yes, TOPs are often used on vintage race and pleasure boats, but no, unless in good running condition NOW, they dont bring high prices.

Running when put away/stopped using it is basically still a parts motor until proven otherwise.

You might find someone who has 1 that NEEDS yours for a rebuild, or who grew up w 1 and is now looking for one to out on their boat now.

A 2 year production run doesnt make it more collectible to most. There are probably a few diehard Merc fans that might like to have it, but they arent likely to pay much for a currently not running motor, 2yr production or not. There were still probably a million of them sold.

Stored for 10yrs is hard on old boat motors, the under cowl wiring esp. Anyone that currently sells parts for it will know its a 2yr production run, and will probably charge accordingly, particularly for NOS parts, most likely used parts too.

Good luck, unfortunately, selling the motor and trailer w the Caravelle is the best way to sell the boat. But the trailer and motor will probably sell for more if seperately sold.

Then you've got a trailerless and motorless boat to get rid of. Not always an easy thing to do, even now, just before boating season starts in most of the lower 48.....

Best of luck again,

EDIT: Further research suggests its a 2 yr run, 1968 and 1969
Serial numbers 2314956 thru 2483741 were 1968 models.
Serial numbers 2536210 thru 2839368 were 1969 models.
Merc 1250E Short Shaft, Electric Starting with Alternator and Merc 1250EL Long Shaft, Electric Starting with Alternator models were produced.

I think there are still lots of them in certain locales.----Places that have few lakes and a short season.------In my area they have all been recycled.-----See newer inline 6 motors abandoned all the time.

I appreciate the input. Looks like I'll be putting the boat as a complete unit on Craigslist.
