mercury 115p 1986 model drive shaft is not turning?

hi just recently i took out my boat out and as i was going out from the ramp my mercury 115 hp 1986 model stoped moving and started to rev out and stoped pumping out water prop wont spin engine turns on but drive shaft wont turn any ideas that would help me fix the problem?

How do you know the driveshaft isn't turning? Have you dropped the lower unit off the motor? You'll have to do that anyway to assess the waterpump issue. I suspect, that if your driveshaft is, in fact, not turning, then you either snapped the shaft or the splines are stripped off the shaft. A broken shaft might mean you have a bent exhaust housing or possibly an issue inside the gearcase. Stripped splines might indicate improper servicing the last time the waterpump was done and someone neglected to grease the splines, leading to the splines inside the crankshaft rusting out.

Bottom line, take the unit off and see if you can figure out what's going on... Whatever has happened ought to be readily apparent when you do.

Crankshaft splines could be gone also... seen several.

thanks for the help yes i have droped the lower unit and i know for a fact the drive shaft isnt turning a new water pump was installed and water still wasnt going through also when we placed the lower unit back on making sure the drive shaft is in place we turned on the engine and the drive shaft just jumped right out im pretty sure the splines on the drive shaft and warned down and causing the problem if i replace the drive shaft would it fix the problem or am i better off just getting a new lower unit? thanks again for the help

What are you referring to when you say " driveshaft "-------Is this the shaft with the propeller ( horizontal ) or the shaft that the waterpump is on ( vertical )------Not sure what you mean with ----" driveshaft just jumped right out "------Remove lower unit and post picture of top of driveshaft and spline area.-----Replacing a driveshaft is $$$ work and requires knowledge of shimming the pinion gear.

sorry for the late reply been away its the shaft that the water pump is on vertical i will take photos of the top area of the shaft area and post them when the lower unit is off thanks

If you think it is due to the vertical driveshaft see if you can find/borrow a lower unit from someone. At least test it prior to doing anything major. If it did jump you would here a heck of a noise coming from it due to the shafe and crank not meshing and severe grinding.

You sure it isnt a spun hub? and maybe the water pump didnt get installed correctly.

hi im sure its the vertical driveshaft no noise or grinding can be heard engine just stays on and revs normally when put into gear but water dose not go through due to the vertical driveshaft not turning how do i check if the hub is spun?
i havent had the chance to pull off the lower unit again due to be bieng busy at work i will post photos of it when i get the chance of the splines
